Karla has become a regular at our Nerang Clinic over the past few weeks, she strolls into the clinic in her winter coat and is put to bed on a nice warm fluffy blanket. The reason for Karla's frequent visits is she has Diabetes. Although this is not a common disease amongst animals it is another problem to be aware of.
Karla was examined on the 24th June 2002, her owner reported that she had lost weight, was always hungry despite the fact that she was eating more than ever and she was also drinking more. The vet took some blood and completed a full blood screen and urine test. The results of the blood screen included high glucose levels, the urine test also indicated that Karla had Diabetes. Karla's clinical signs are quite common in Diabetes, luckily for Karla her parents were observant and noticed the changes.
Karla was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus a condition which can be controlled with daily insulin injections. Luckily for Karla her parents were up for the challenge of managing a senior pet with Diabetes. Her parents give her insulin injections daily and monitor her diet very closely. Karla's visits to our Nerang clinic have been to monitor her blood glucose and ensure her condition is being managed effectively.
