Makita is a 12yr old Rotti cross Shepherd and for those avid readers of our AquaDog articles his name may sound familiar. Mak was also our swimmer of the month back in September 2006. He had been swimming with us for just one month back then and had impressed us with his immediate response to hydrotherapy. He still continues to impress us and can be proud of his title of AquaDog swimmer of the month again two years down the track.
When Mak first visited us at AquaDog 2yrs ago, he was suffering from osteoarthritis in his hips and knees and was finding it difficult to get up and down. With his veterinarian's advice and a carefully designed program by our AquaDog team, Mak started gently swimming only 7 laps on lead with the assistance of a floation vest. Over the next few months this was slowly increased under the watchful eye of his owner and the AquaDog vet nurse and swimming coach. Two years later, Mak is now so fit he is easily able to do up to 35 laps without a life vest. Mak's fitness and mobility has improved outstandingly thanks to the special Hills prescription diet j/d and his weekly swimming program. Mak's proud owner Kirri said " If it wasn't for the j/d diet and swimming his road to recovery would have been a lot slower. I think it is wonderful that he is getting around so much better. I love the program" And Mak certainly enjoys it too. Its not just therapy, but lots of fun too.
Duke's Story
Duke Lorcan is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and is only 5 months old. A few weeks ago he came to our Puppy Pre-school water safety class for his first ever swim. At AquaDog we believe in encouraging puppies to become confident in the water from a young age. Duke Lorcan was quite hesitant to jump in the pool the first few times, but as he learned that he was safe with his little floatie jacket on, he became much happier to swim. When he learnt where the exit ramp of the pool was, he felt confident he could get out safely. Duke Lorcan has been back to swim a few times now and he has loved it more and more each time! In fact at his third swim just recently, there was not stopping him. He now races in straight down the ramp especially if there's another dog in the pool to follow and play chasy. Now he absolutely loves swimming. We just can't get him out!!
Monty's Story
Monty Abbot is a Border Collie x (possibly) Great Dane!
He is 8 years old which is well into his senior years for a large dog.
Monty began swimming at Aquadog in December last year for fun, exercise and to help with his arthritis. Because swimming is a great form of non-weight bearing exercise, Monty can build his muscles and strengthen his arthritic joints without straining them. Monty loves to come swimming every week with his friends, and loves to fetch his toys!
We can definitely see that he is stronger and happier for it!
The Aqua Dog Health and Fitness Centre is a great place for senior pets. The temperature controlled environment makes it safe for winter swimming and the benefits to heart, muscles and joints are well documented and terrific for older pets.
Mak's Story
Makita is a 10 year old Rotti x Shepherd who suffers from arthritis in his hips, knees and spine. He was getting very weak and finding it difficult to get up and down. Mak started swimming in July and swims twice weekly. After only 3 months we are seeing a dramatic difference in his strength and mobility and he is even running again!
Faith's Story
Faith is a 5 year old Rottweiler with endless energy!
She had knee surgery in early September 2006 and began physio and swimming shortly after. Faiths muscles are very strong now and she also holds the new Aquadog record at 60 laps!
She has recently had her other knee operated on and she has recovred very well, thanks to swimming at Aquadog!
Jackson's Story
Jackson is a 5 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was a
little on the chubby side..........However, thanks to swimming at Aquadog every week and Hills Science R/D diet, Jackson has shed over 3 kilos!
He has now rediscovered his waistline and is happier, healthier and has more energy than ever before! Swimming is great for weight loss because it is low impact and 10 minutes of swimming is equivalent to approximately an hour of walking!
Well done Jackson.
Robbie's Story
Robbie is a 7 year old blue cattle dog who ruptured his cruciate ligament in June and had surgery. During his recovery he lost most of his muscle mass in that leg. Robbie began swimming in August and comes once weekly. After only 2 months we saw a dramatic build up in his muscles and now, after 6 months he is 100% weight bearing on that leg. Robbie has more muscles and strength than ever before!
Tana's Story
Tana is a 13yr old Cocker Spaniel that has arthritis. Now in her golden years of retirement she has been enjoying her swimming and joint therapy at AquaDog since it opened. Tana’s mum Chris, an Instructor at Gold Coast Dog Obedience Club, highly recommends our AquaDog Health & Fitness Centre as an excellent specialised swimming facility for dogs needing joint therapy. “Tana’s arthritis has improved considerably both physically and mentally since commencing her therapy. It is a weekly treat for myself, Tana and Tana’s younger housemate, Amy, to all come to the pool for a swim.” explained Chris. Well done Tana and also thanks , Chris and Amy.
